Mandawa Group of Hotels
The Mandawa Group of Hotels is a privately owned hotel company, rich in heritage and history. What is unique to this group of heritage hotels is that it is a family run hotel and the 10th generation of the royal family of Mandawa still resides in the fort.Mandawa, founded by Thakur Naval Singh, a descendant of Rao Shekhaji, a princeling of the royal family of Jaipur, was a remote feudal principality in the centre of the Shekhawati region. It was a trading outpost for the ancient caravan routes that stopped here from China and the Middle East thereby attracting a large community of traders, who settled here. Later, however, when the caravan traffic ceased in the late 18th century, the traders created business empires in other parts of the country, but returned to Mandawa to build palatial mansions in their hometown. Today, the world comes to this storybook town to see its colourful frescoes on every subject under the sun, ranging from the religious to the erotic, from copies of popular English prints to witty social satire, rendered in the inimitable style of the local artist. With its headquarters in Jaipur, Rajasthan, the company started its first hotel in 1978 by converting their 200 year-old-fort in their village of Mandawa in Shekhawati into a hotel. A Heritage Hotel in Rajasthan, Castle Mandawa has won National and State Tourism Awards for the best hotel in the “Heritage Category”. Like many historic homes, Castle Mandawa too is a curious mixture of the old and the new. Medieval turreted towers, palanquin-roofed balconies, blend with modern comforts in old-world rooms. Family portraits, antique cannons and arms add to the charm of this family-run resort where tradition still runs strong. Even time is measured by a different clock… a huge brass gong struck by the resident timekeepers at the fort every hour!By 1983 the Company had established The Desert Resort, just one km away from the town of Mandawa. Conceptualized on a sand dune, this unique and charming retreat makes for a great setting for a fabulous vacation. Designed to replicate the local tribal clusters, this oasis borrows from the region’s farmer, potter and weaver’s huts to create 73 well appointed rooms and huts in rustic style. The resort is spread over 65 acres of green and houses a water body that feeds out of recycled pool water to attract birds and animals. It has received the National Tourism Award for seven consecutive years from 1993 onwards. In the year 2000, the Company converted the family’s town residence into a luxury heritage hotel in Jaipur. Mandawa Haveli is conveniently located near the old city, well within reach of most of the monuments and sightseeing attractions.
